Elisa Vicenzi si è laureata in Farmacia nel 1980 presso l’Università di Ferrara e ha ottenuto il titolo di Specialista in Ricerche Farmacologiche presso l’Istituto di Ricerca Farmacologica "Mario Negri" di Milano, nel 1985. 

Nel 1986 si è trasferita negli Stati Uniti d’America presso il Laboratory of Molecular Microbiology, NIAID, NIH con una posizione di Visiting Associate. Nel 1993 è ritornata in Italia all’Ospedale/Istituto Scientifico San Raffaele di Milano come Senior Investigator dell’Unità di Immunopatogenesi dell’AIDS e, dal gennaio 2006, è a Capo dell’Unità di Patogenesi Virale e Biosicurezza. 

Il focus della sua ricerca è sempre stato lo studio dei patogeni virali umani con l’obiettivo di contribuire alla prevenzione e al trattamento delle malattie correlate. Oltre alla ricerca sui fattori di restrizione dell’HIV-1, nel 2003 Elisa Vicenzi ha esteso il suo interesse di ricerca al coronavirus SARS (SARS-CoV) isolando il virus da un individuo infetto e quindi studiando tropismo ed evoluzione virale di SARS-CoV. Lo studio sul coronavirus della SARS ha aperto le porte al campo dei virus emergenti e, in particolare, al virus dell’influenza A pandemica del 2009, nel 2016 al virus Zika e dal 2020 al virus SARS-CoV-2. 

Elisa Vicenzi è autrice di 134 lavori scientifici di cui 101 articoli originali e 33 review. Inoltre è accreditata di un h-index di 36 (Scopus).

Elisa Vicenzi graduated in pharmacology in 1980 from the University of Ferrara in Italy, and specialized in research methods at the “Mario Negri” Istitute for Pharmacological Research in Milan in 1985. In 1986 she moved to the USA to work on molecular microbiology, NIAID, and NIH. In 1993 she returned to Italy to the San Raffaele Hospital and Scientific Institute of Milan as a senior researcher for the AIDS Immunopathogenesis Unit. Since January 2006, she heads its Viral Pathogenesis and Biosafety Unit. The focus of her research has always been the study of human viral pathogens with the aim of contributing to the prevention and treatment of their related diseases. In addition to researching HIV-1 restriction factors, in 2003 Elisa extended her interest to include the SARS Coronavirus (SARS-CoV). By isolating the virus from an infected individual and then studying the tropism and viral evolution, this SARS coronavirus research has opened up the field of emerging viruses, and in particular the 2009 pandemic influenza A virus and the 2016 Zika virus.
